PIMS Umarda Hospital in Udaipur: A Beacon of Hope for Opioid Intoxication Cases

Udaipur : PIMS Umarda Hospital has recently been hailed for its exceptional care and prompt intervention in a critical case of opioid intoxication involving a 65-year-old patient, Mr. Mohan Gadre from Sawariya, Udaipur. Mr. Gadre was brought to the hospital’s emergency department at 7 PM on July 19, 2024, by his concerned family members.
Upon arrival, Mr. Gadre presented with severe symptoms including high-grade fever, muscle and neck rigidity, pinpoint pupils, and an inability to walk, talk, or eat for the previous day. He also had a history of ingesting approximately 50 grams of affim, a potent opioid. His immediate transfer to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) was crucial for addressing his life-threatening condition.
Diagnostic tests revealed that while his CT brain scan was normal, his cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis showed an alarming increase in lymphocytes, protein, and cellularity. The multidisciplinary team at PIMS acted swiftly; he was placed on a ventilator and administered intravenous Naloxone, an antidote for opioid overdose, along with antibiotics and Levetiracetam.
The ICU team, led by Dr. Amit Kumar, managed Mr. Gadre’s condition meticulously over the next three days, eventually stabilizing him and allowing for a successful recovery by the fifth day. His condition significantly improved, and he was subsequently moved to the psychiatry ward for opioid withdrawal management.
In a compassionate gesture reflecting the hospital’s commitment to providing accessible healthcare, the management of PIMS waived Mr. Gadre’s fees, acknowledging the family’s financial constraints.
Mr. Gadre’s family expressed deep gratitude for the outstanding care and timely treatment provided. They emphasized that despite their modest means, they received top-notch medical attention.
PIMS Umarda Hospital stands as a crucial resource in Udaipur, particularly for those struggling with opioid use and related issues. The dedicated team of professionals, including Prof. Praveen Khairkar, Prof. Rajesh Khoiwal, Dr. Amit Kumar, Dr. Archish Khivsara, and Dr. Ishu Bamal, continue to collaborate seamlessly, offering exemplary clinical services to the community.
